NOMAD OF THE WEEK // CHADD KONIG, A YURT LIFE.

In Northern California, Chadd Konig is enjoying empty lineups and a back to roots way of life, where he found a deep connection with both the land and the ocean.

As Professional surfer he gave up the warm beaches of southern California and went in search of something else, something deeper and more meaningful.

After finding a plot of land in Northern California close to some amazing surf spots, he built a yurt and began growing a vegetable garden. He uses raining water and natural power from the sun to meet his own needs.

He’s enjoying a way of life powered by natural elements. He’s taking only what nature can provide him, but not more. He’s more focus on what is essential and not immaterial. As the life is short, he considers not having time to waste with futility.

Paddling out alone in the early morning light without another soul in the water for maybe 100 miles; Receiving some warmth from his dog; Driving into town to meet the local community and sharing a Sunday brunch. This is a typical morning for Chadd and the reasons why he moved to this rural stretch of Northern California.

We’ve largely forgotten what community feels like, but there are places that still keep the real meaning of that word alive. These rural places can survive because people learn to take care of each other.

The farm is one of the main things that compelled him to move from the warmth and friendly beaches of Southern California. After a few years of traveling and being in the surf scene, he started to feel a need to simplify his life and reconnect with the resources we all depend on to sustain life.

Leading a simpler life can be complicated in the beginning. New routines take time to develop, food takes time to grow and skills are often times acquired through trial and error. Eventually things fall into rhythm and the new normal brings different priorities into focus.
